BROKEN ARROW SKYRACE
UV Load™ at
Broken Arrow
Mountain trail running puts athletes in one of the highest-exposure environments in endurance sport: altitude, thin atmosphere, exposed ridge sections, long single-day efforts in mid-summer sun. UV Load was built for exactly this. Broken Arrow is the first race anywhere in the world to put it in the hand of every entrant.
Every entrant gets priority access to the missing training and racing metric, developed at the world’s biggest races, alongside Pelotan’s class-leading sun protection at every aid station.

THE DETAILS
What is UV Load™ ?
UV Load is a 0 to 100 score for UV strain on the athlete. Built by Pelotan, the world's first sun performance brand, with elite endurance athletes across cycling, triathlon, ultra running, mountain sports and major marathons. It sits in the same data shelf as Whoop for strain, TrainingPeaks for TSS and Core for heat. UV Load does for sun exposure what Whoop does for recovery.
A score above 80 is serious. Comparable to a full day of racing in high-sun conditions. The peer-reviewed effects on athletes are documented: faster fatigue, impaired recovery, immune suppression, raised core temperature, increased oxidative stress.
UV Load draws on data from racing environments where exposure is at its highest. A few of the benchmarks the metric was calibrated against:
ARPANSA threshold: 10 SED per day is classed as excessive in occupational settings. Long endurance events routinely hit 20 to 30. Athletes are operating at multiples of the recommended max, every day.
Tour de France 2025: average UV Load 78. The men's peloton accumulated 411 SED across 21 racing days, the same UV exposure as the average Danish person gets in a year.
IRONMAN Kona 2025: UV Load 95. Athletes were burned through SPF 25+ for 9 hours of racing.

WHAT YOU GET
For Every Broken Arrow Participant
The UV Load App
You measure power. Heart rate. Sleep. You don't measure UV. Sun exposure isn't a health footnote — it's a performance variable. It accelerates fatigue, impairs sweat efficiency, raises core temperature, and disrupts recovery. The UV Index gives you a single point in time, while UV Load™ gives you the cumulative number that actually matters, both per-session, and cumulatively - explaning what that exposure is doing to your performance and recovery.
When you measure UV Load, you can adapt for it.Pelotan At The Race

ACTIVITY DETAIL
Data, not vibes.
Tap any activity to unpack the full picture: average UV index across your actual route, cloud cover on the day, temperature, and the numeric UV Load explaining how it hit you and how to mitigate the effects.

- Hourly UV strain curve through the session
- Colour-matched to your result

CUMULATIVE STRAIN
Zoom out to see the impact.
You measure power and adapt training. You measure HRV and adapt recovery. The rolling 7-day UV Load is the same logic, one week at a time. Watch the number through the week and the decisions get specific. When the load climbs, you reapply earlier, you move the mid-day ride, you swap short sleeves for long. When it drops, you stop worrying about it. Track your performance and recovery with the full picture.
If nothing else, you'll know why some days you feel more cooked than others!
- Rolling 7-day UV Load vs. prior week
- Week-at-a-glance band-coloured dots
- Daily bars show when load actually spiked

HOW IT WORKS
Three steps, one score.
Connect Strava
Sign in, authorize Strava once. The UV Load™ app automatically picks up each new outdoor activity, plus those in the last 5 days to help build your baseline.
We do the math
For each session we fuse your route and a data stack including the hour-by-hour UV index, cloud cover and elevation into a single UV Load™ score from 0–100. Think of it as a Whoop strain score but for UV exposure.
Know your dose
See per-session impact and weekly cumulative strain with a push notification the moment a new activity is analysed.
Track your performance and recovery with the full picture.
WRITES BACK TO STRAVA
We auto-update your Strava description with the numbers that matter.
Finish a session — Pelotan analyses it, writes a clean UV Load summary into your Strava activity description, and pings you.
- UV Load score, band and avg UV index — all appended automatically
- You keep the original description; we add a Pelotan block underneath

THE SCIENCE
Generic UV apps look at your zip code.
We look at the hours you spent racing Broken Arrow.
UV Index × Duration
The UV forecast from your actual GPS track, from the moment you start moving, to the moment you stop. Not a single reading from a generic city-wide weather API.
Cloud & Elevation
Cloud cover and altitude both change how much UV reaches your skin. We weight both, because a cloudy 2000m col still takes a performance toll.
Cumulative Load
Single sessions rarely do the damage — weeks of moderate exposure do. Pelotan rolls 7 days of dose into one comparable number, with a 30 day view for the racing season.
Science Foundation, Race Proven
Calibrated against ARPANSA risk thresholds, and anchored to peer-reviewed exercise physiology. UV Load™ is a measurement, not a marketing claim.
UV Load™ is a training-load–style metric we developed. Not medical advice.

The usual questions.
-
Yes — Pelotan is a companion layer on top of Strava. After you sign in we ask you to authorize Strava once; from then on activities flow in automatically via webhook. We never ask for your Strava password.
-
No. UV Load™ is a fitness-style metric designed to help athletes make their own informed decisions about sun exposure. We surface the numbers — your dermatologist still gets to decide what protection you actually need.
